How to: Visit Attractions and Museums for free!

There are many wonderful attractions all over the world, but seeing them all can work out expensive. However, many have free admission days at certain times of day, certain days or perhaps once a month. Check out what you can see and when for free!

Free admission days are notoriously busy. Sometimes it’s worth paying those few pounds for a bit more elbow room!

The Colosseum first Sunday of every month
The Vatican last Sunday of every month, closes around noon, packed
St Peters Basilisca free every day
Pantheon free every day


The Louvre, Musée Rodin, Musée Picasso and Musée d’Orsay free entry first Sunday of every month
Notre Dame, the Sacre Coure, Petit Palais, City of Paris Museum of Modern Art and Musée Carnavalet are always free


Prado Museum free entry Tuesday to Sunday from 6pm to 8pm, or Sundays from 5pm to 8pm.
Reina Sofia Museum free entry Monday to Friday from 7pm to 9pm, Saturday from 2.30pm to 9pm, or Sunday from 10am to 2.30pm.


Museumweek Most Musuems in The Netherlands take part in the annual Museumweek event. During this week the museums put on special events and throw theirs doors open to free entry. The 2015 and 2016 events are planned for: 18-24 April 2015 and 16-22 April 2016
GVB ferries have several free ferries from behind Central Station


Castle Hill and Buda Castle it is free to enter the Castle District on top of the Castle Hill, including the Castle. Interestingly the Castle never closes and is open throughout the night.
Hungarian Parliament these iconic buildings are free to visit for EU tourists
St Stephen’s Basilica is free entry at all times
The Museum of Fine Art, Hungarian National Gallery, Hungarian National Museum and Museum of Hungarian Agriculture have free entry on National Holidays 15th March, 20th August and 23rd October.


National Museum free entry on the first Monday of every month


The National Museum free entry at all times
Botanical Garden free entry at all times
The National Gallery of Denmark free entry at all times

St Petersburg

Hermitazh (Hermitage) free entry on the first Thursday of every month


Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA), the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics and the Gulag History Museum are all free on the third Sunday of every month
St. Basil’s Cathedral free entry during worship service every Sunday


Many museums in Berlin offer free entry at all times. However some do so on certain days:
Akademie der Künste (Pariser Platz and Hanseatenweg) First Sunday of the month
Bröhan-Museum First Wednesday of the month
Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin On Monday
Domäne Dahlem First Wednesday of the Month (Museum)
Märkisches Museum – Stadtmuseum Berlin First Wednesday of the month
Nikolaikirche – Stadtmuseum Berlin First Wednesday of the month


Smithsonian Museums are free admission every day

New York

American Museum of Natural History free in its last hour (4:45-5:45pm), and admission price is ‘suggested’ at all other times
Brooklyn Botanic Garden free Tuesday, 10am to noon Saturday and weekdays in winter (Nov-Feb)
Brooklyn Museum free first Saturday of the month, when there’s big wine-sipping, DJ parties that draw half the neighbourhood
Bronx Zoo pay what you wish on Wednesday.
El Museo del Barrio free the third Saturday of the month
Sami Noguchi Garden Museum pay what you wish, first Friday of the month
Museum of Modern Art Entry is free 4-8pm on Friday. Gets busy
Museum of the Moving Image free 4-8pm Friday
Neue Galerie free 6-8pm the first Friday of the month.
New York Botanical Garden free Wednesday, 9-10am Saturday
New York Historical Society pay what you wish, 6-8pm Friday
New York Aquarium pay what you wish from 3pm Fridays (4pm in summer).
Studio Museum in Harlem free on Sunday.
Staten Island Ferry is free and allows you to see the Statue of Liberty. Don’t pay for the tourist boats
